The PDF file (Portable Document Format) allows us to keep the original layout of a document or file under all circumstances, regardless of our software or operating system used to open it.
It is created by the company Adobe, nowadays it is the most used all over the world. Below are some explanations of this internationally compatible format which has become a main standard for sharing documents.
PDF is the abbreviation for Portable Document Format. This is a format of a computer file, it was created in 1993 by Adobe Systems, the famous software publisher. This format was born under the impetus of Adobe creator John Warnock, originally for internal use only. The company subsequently decided to distribute this format even more widely, by also making available the software to read it, Acrobat Reader. PDF remained a proprietary format until 2008, when it eventually became an ISO 32000 standard, so open to anything.
Special features of the PDF format
PDF has a number of advantages that explain its success and its permanence over time. A file in PDF format displays and keeps the same content and the same layout (fonts, layout, graphics, tables, images, and margins …) regardless of the operating system or the software used to make its reading.
A Windows user can fix their document, and send it as is to another person using, for example, a Mac. The same is true for printing the document, which will remain as it is.
PDF also has the particularity of being interactive, more particularly with the integration of:
- 3D videos or images
It is also secure with the ability to configure them to protect the file, including using watermarks, passwords or digital signatures.
Finally, the creator of a PDF can also compress his file to the desired size.
PDF readers on Windows and Mac
The most common PDF reader is Acrobat Reader, created for this format, in version 19. PDFelement is also another free software available, on Windows and Mac, as well as Foxit Reader.
